ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

Notice
  • The attendance policy will be included in student/parent handbooks and will be reviewed with students at the start of the school year.
  • When a student is absent, tardy, or leaves early from class or school without excuse, designated staff members will notify the student’s parents by phone of the specific ATED (unexcused absences, tardiness, and early departures), remind them of the attendance policy, and review ATED intervention procedures with them.
  • "Meet the Teacher" night will be held at the beginning of each school year to explain this policy and stress the parent’s responsibility for their ensuring their children’s attendance.
  • Faculty and staff will be provided with a copy of the attendance policy and any amendments.
  • All faculty and staff will meet at the beginning of each school year to review the attendance policy to clarify individual roles in its implementation.
  • Copies of this policy will be made available to any community member upon request.

 General Procedures

  • The homeroom teacher will take attendance at the beginning of each school day.
  • All attendance information will be compiled and sent to the main office.
  • The nature of an ATED will be coded on a student’s record.
  • Student data will be available to and reviewed by the building principal in an expeditious manner.
  • Where additional information is received that requires corrections to be made to a student’s attendance records such correction will be made immediately. Notice of a change will be sent to appropriate school personnel subject to applicable confidentiality rules.
  • The building principal and school nurse will analyze attendance data periodically to identify patterns or trends in student absences.
  • Continuous monitoring will be conducted to identify students who are absent, tardy, or leave class or school early.

 Attendance Incentives

  • An attendance honor roll will be maintained and posted monthly identifying those students with perfect attendance.

Disciplinary Consequences

  • The principal and or guidance counselor will contact the student’s parents in writing. They will remind parents of the attendance policy, explain the ramifications of unexcused absences, stress the importance of attendance and discuss appropriate intervention strategies to correct the situation.

Attendance/Grade Policy

  • The relationship between attendance and student performance is essential. Consequently, each marking period a student’s grades may be based on classroom participation as well as a student’s performance on homework, tests, papers, projects, etc.
  • Students who are unable to attend school on a given day due to their participation in a school-sponsored activity (i.e. music lessons, field trips) may arrange with their teachers to make up any missed work. This also applies to any student who is absent, tardy or leaves early from school or class due to illness or any other excused reason.
  • Students who are absent from school for unexcused reasons (i.e. a family vacation that does not coincide with the school calendar) will be expected to make up all work on their own. Teachers are not responsible to provide work for students when families choose to remove their children from school for extended unexcused absences.
  • All students with excused or unexcused absences are expected upon their return to consult with their teachers regarding missed work.
  • Students who are absent from school will be given make up opportunities for specific assessments and assignments and must complete the aforementioned by a date specified by the student’s teacher.
