Dear Residents, This year will be a celebration of history as the Highview building turns 100 and the George W. Miller building turns 50! In 1904, when Mr. George W. Miller came to Nanuet as a teacher/principal, the District facilities consisted of a single structure with outdoor plumbing. Two years later, the town and the school board passed a proposal to construct a one-story building, then changed the plans to a two-story structure. The Highview Elementary School opened its doors in September 1908 at a total cost of $17,000! Increasing enrollment necessitated the building of two additional wings over the next half-century. But, as the “baby boomers” began turning school age, the crunch was becoming unbearable forcing officials to approve the building of a second elementary school. Two parcels of land-one on Blauvelt Road and one on Church Street-were purchased and the George W. Miller Elementary School, a double-winged one–story building, was completed by 1957. In the late Spring, the Board will host a public ceremony honoring our history and the present. We will cut the ribbon to officially open the District’s new fields on the Convent Road property and we will celebrate Highview and Miller’s birthdays. I invite all our residents to join us. Details of this event and all monthly events at the schools are available with our E-News letters. We began this service last year not only as a cost-cutting measure but also to get you school news in a more timely manner. I urge you to go to our homepage and sign up for this service at the K12 Alerts link. Sincerely, Mark McNeill |
